Research & Planning: Music Magazine Update

This is my cover so far, there is a quite a bit of work to do on it. I need to add my photo, decide on a colour scheme and sort out the layout of the cover so it looks more professional.

Research & Planning: Production Documents

Research & Planning:Make-Up

This my models make up look used in the pictures. I used this look because it looked natural and will look effective in the photo's. I chose not to use a smokey eye because it would have looked to harsh against Beth's skin-tone.

Research & Planning: Make Up & Hair Ideas

These are some ideas for Beth's hair and makeup.

A brown smokey eye would look natural and subtle and would also working with Beth's skin and hair colour and not look to harsh on her.
I like this look however I don't now if you would be able to see it that clearly in long shot photo's also is using black rather than neutral tone which is what I wanted.

Research & Planning:Magazine Photo Plan

For my  photo's I am going to take them in Hyde park on the bandstand as I think it fits in with my genre and will look fun and colourful.  I am going to edit the lighting, so it bright and sunny. Also this area of the park is clean and neat look so will look 'pretty' in the photos. All though these photographs may look posed however I think it will fit with genre because these kind of photos are whats expected in magazines with famous celebrities.

For the props in photos I am going to use balloons, as my double page spread story is going to be about my models rise to the top of the industry and how she feels she is on top of the world, and I think the balloons will symbolize this and hopefully they will bring some more colour into the photos. I will also edit the photos in photoshop to make the props look brighter.

For the outfit in my pictures I am going to keep the outfit quite simple so that the props stand and also Beth has quite vivid red hair which could clash with certain colours so I am going to find an outfit that compliments her hair and makes it stand out. The dress I ended up choosing was a black pleated dress paired with a cream belt and black heels with cream details. The black allowed Beth's hair to stand out and it also makes the brightly coloured balloons stand out more.

Research & Planning:Artists Associated

These are some artists that are associated my chosen genre of pop.

Beyonce
Lady Gaga
Katy Perry
Britney Spears
  Kesha

I have chosen these artists as they had single in the UK charts which are the types of artists that I am going to include in my magazine.

Research & Planning: Possible Locations

 This is my chosen location.

I like this location because it would create contrast between the pop look of my model and the urban feel of the stairs, however these stairs are quite dirty and I don't think they would look nice enough in the photo's. Also they are quite high and not quite safe enough, plus my model is scared of highs so she may become uneasy which could effect the picture quality.

I like these wall as they look different and again contrast with the model however I don;t think they would work in a pop magazine so therefore I don't think I will use them.

I am going to visit the park later in this week and take some location shots of the bandstand as it is quite light and I think would fit more with my chosen genre, also there are a few different ways in could be photographed. I will add this photo to this post.

Research & Planning: Plan For The Week

This week I am going to:

Go on a location recce to find suitable location for my pictures, that photograph well and also fit with my genre, to go with this I will also do a risk assessment I am aware of hazards that could occur whilst taking my pictures.

Choose at appropriate outfit, hairstyle and make up look for my cover and double page spread.

Begin work on my magazine using In design and photoshop, starting with my masthead and cover.

Research & Planning: Head Shots

I have chosen this model as I think she has more of pop look and would stand out in my magazine.
I think this model would work better in a rick magazine due to her style and appearance.
These are the head shots I have taken so far I will be taking more this week.

Research & Planning: Plan For The Week

This week I am going to:

Start my magazine, firstly by working on a design for my mast head, choosing a colour scheme that works well and fits with my genre.

I am going to take head shots of potential models for my magazine, this will help my decided what look is suitable for my magazine.Hopefully by the end of this week I will have picked a model

Finally I am going to begin writing my double page spread that will appear in my magazine, this will be one of the special features in my magazine so the story will need to be interesting and appealing to the audience.

Research & Planning: SLR Camera Shots

I think this photo is clear and good quality however it could have been closer. It looks good because it is a action shot so her focus isn't on the camera and it is a natural not posed.
This outside shot is quite out of focus and blurry. However I do like the angle of this shot  from another angle rather than the front.

Genre Analysis:Outfit Inspiration

For my magazine photo's the outfit is important as it reflects the genre and people will need to associate the outfit with the genre. To find a suitable outfit,I am going to look at other female artists in pop to see what kind of outfits they wear and what the overall look is.

All Katy Perry outfits are colourful and fun. They aren't typically outfits that would be worn for everyday wear as some of them are quite daring. She mainly wears dresses usually above the knee and they always have pattern, picture or slogan on. She doesn't wear many accessories, I think because the dresses are quite bold so they aren't needed. From these outfits I think I should choose a colourful outfit that stands out on the page and is eye-catching.

The Saturday days outfits are more trend focused and not quite as fun as Katy Perry's, which is what I may do for my magazine, as they are a band the outfits usually all follow the same colour scheme.Which is what I could do even with just one model as have decided to feature a solo artist in my magazine, sticking to one colour in all the outfits depending on how many photos are taken.

From this research I have found that these two artists both wear more dressy clothing rather than casual. One is more colourful, fun and sometimes quite novelty and the other is more trend focused. Even though I like the look of both these artists I think I am going to make my outfit/ outfits for my magazine more trend focus as it will be easier to source these outfits rather than extravagant outfits like Katy Perry's.

Research & Planning: Equipment & Software List

To make my music magazine I will need:

A camera
A Mac
Photoshop software
Indesign Software

Research & Planning: Music Magazine Costume & Props List

 Costume

Black Dress by Miso
Black and cream shoes by New Look
Cream belt by Primark

Props
Balloons

Research & Planning: Location Ideas

For my music magazine the location is important because I want the location to fit in with the my chosen genre of pop music. For the location I want some where with good natural lighting.  I think it would look good if there was a contrast between the location and the model as the final photo's would interesting to look at.

To help me find a suitable relationship I am going to take some photos of locations that I think would work well and look good in my magazine.

Research & Planning: Double Page Spread Analysis

Genre: You can this is aimed at reader who like pop music due the artist featured Lily Allen, who is a current pop/chart music star.

Target Audience: I think the target audience for this magazine/article is young people who have interest in music and like to keep up with the charts. It is eye catching to the audience because the picture is clear and stands out and also the headline it interesting and is a bold drawing the reader attention.

Layout: The layout for the double page spread works well because there isn't too much text which can put a reader off. The layout is also eye catching because the picture is a mid shot and her clothing stands out against the white background. Also the font works well as it is bold and looks different to other fonts normally used in magazines.

Representation: Lily Allen comes across as pop star who is denying rumors against her, showing she is a popular artist who is in the media. She appears to be confident in the photo and is looking directly at the camera and leaning towards showing she is comfortable.

Research & Planning: Contents Page Analysis

                 Contents Page from Billboard magazine.

Genre: You can tell this is a pop music magazine due to the artist featured in the picture such as Katy Perry, also there is a chart listing which tells me it is aimed at people interested in music in charts.

Target Audience: I think the target audience for this magazine would 15-18 year old either male or female as there are feature which would be appealing to both genders. I think the magazine has done this well as it is not biased towards one gender.

Layout: The layout of this contents page works well because it clear and it is easy to find what type of articles you are looking for due to the headings. There are also page number which makes articles easy to find. Also the pictures work well as they help stop the page from have too much font. On the contents page important articles are also written in a different colour so they stand out and so the reader can find them easily. The text is written it columns which makes it easier to read.

Representation: In the picture the artist are shown looking laid back and relaxed. there is also a picture of one the artists performing live. The picture also tell the reader there will be an article about them and the picture draws attention to this fact. The artist are wearing mainly casual clothes.

Media Language: In the photo's used on the contents page  mid shot is used in most of the pictures, this could be so the reader can see  the emotions in the artist's face rather than their whole bodies.
A type of camera angle used is eye level especially on the bigger picture, this allows the reader to connect with the artist as they are on the same level.

Research & Planning:Target Audience

  • For my music magazine my target audiences age will be 15-18, this because I think they be interested in pop music and so my magazine will appeal to them.
  • I think the gender more likely to buy my magazine are females
  • Most of my audience will still be in education, some college and maybe even some at university.
  • I think the class of my audience will working/middle class,so magazine will be priced so they can afford to buy it.
  • The wealth of my audience may vary as some of them may have part time jobs and other may not, again this is why my magazine should be reasonable priced so all can afford it.
  • Some of the interests I think my audience may have are fashion, socializing with friends and listening to music.
  • I think most of my audience will want to carry on with education either to college or for some university. I think they will also want to do a job that involves their interests and also a job they enjoy doing.
  • I am going to reach my target audience by including their interests in my magazine so they are likely to buy the magazine. I am also going to make the magazine current to whats happening. I will make the magazine look visual appealing so it is eyecatching.

Research & Planning: Analysis of Music Magazine 2

I have chosen this magazine because it suits my chosen genre of pop. I think this magazine is aimed at young adults, who are interested in chart music, although I think females would be more likely due to the background cover. You can also tell this magazine is aimed at young adults because the stories on the cover are stories young people would be interested in, this something I should keep in mind when I make my magazine.

This cover has the typical features of a magazine, it has a masthead in the correct place which lets everyone know the name of the magazine. There is also a mid shot of Katy Perry on the cover which suggests there will be a feature about her in the magazine.
Most of the cover stories are also on the left hand side of the magazine the same as the rolling stone cover, which is also something I could keep in mind for my magazine. The cover also sticks to the three colour rule quite using black, white and pink as its main colours, however it does sometimes use yellow.
